Linda Gleeson was born in Gosford, NSW, Australia. Daughter of Terry Gleeson and Beverley (Payne), Linda was the third of six children. She attended Catholic primary and secondary schools, then attended a public school for a few months. Linda competed at a representative level in netball, and participated in the annual dramatic productions organised by the schools. At 14 and 9 months Linda began work at Woolworths in Gosford. At age 17 Linda began work as a graphic artist in North Sydney, initially commuting by train to the city. One of the company's client's was McDonald's. Linda moved to Sydney after working for several companies, and amounted a resume of 21 different jobs by the time she was 20 (including a 1.5 day stint on a potato farm). Linda began drawing and painting in 1985, although two earlier works were produced for school grades in art (later destroyed; one was an intricately painted globe which a high school teacher offered to buy, however, the work was taked home and later turned into a football by a sibling). Linda worked as a graphic designer for 15 years, in Sydney, Los Angeles and Canada, painting and drawing in her spare time. She married Craig Findlay in Las Vegas in 1984. Linda and Craig have two children, Sedona and Sage. They seperated in 2001. Linda has travelled extensively, backpacking to countries including Fiji, Bali, Argentina, Bolivia, Peru, USA, Mexico, Canada, England, France, Egypt, Kenya, Tanzania, Zanzibar Island, India, Thailand, Hong Kong, China and New Zealand. It has been Linda's decision to stay at home and care for her two children for the last 9 years. Linda's greatest influences: Linda's father (artist Terry Gleeson) showed her that being an artist was a possible, though in his case, problematic, lifestyle choice. A love of the environment, sociology, and mass media (tv, movies, computer and magazines) contribute to the evolving style/s of Linda's work. Additionally, an interest in politics is currently helping Linda's work evolve. Artist's comment (2005): Regarding the art process - "I find enticement in the scribble I can translate for others. Art is about fun and love. However, the process of creation can sometimes be challenging. If I progress into a particular style that becomes painful, the best response (for me) is to move toward a more pleasurable style." Regarding Linda's style- "The other day an associate described me as being as subtle as a hand grenade in a bowl of custard. While the comment shocked me (I consider myself reserved and backwards in coming forwards), the comment is worth a mention here: my artwork is bold. Even my efforts to portray the subtle beauty of nature have an edge to them." Style of Artwork: Pop, Primitive, Literal, Naive, Realism, Conceptual, Outsider. List of Works featured on this website:
